Westchester4Geese visits Congressman Eliot Engel
August 20, 2013
On 8/20/13 Westchester4Geese descended on the office of Congressman
Eliot Engel (D - 16th District) ; we'd been contacting his office for
over a month to get a meeting date - but this turned out to be 'perfect'
timing, coming on the heels of the latest USDA atrocity in Staten Island
where they viciously rounded up and slaughtered beloved turkey families
- and the purpose of our visit was to discuss the USDA with him, as they
are a federal agency. We expressed our request that legislation be
created to make this agency be far more transparent; that notifications
go out to the public before any 'culls,' in an adequate time to allow
for public comment and debate; severely limiting the amount of permits
issued; and eliminating the p.r. stunt of 'donating' the warning-labeled
flesh from 'culls' to food banks. Mr. Engel immediately announced he
was an animal lover, said he doesn't believe in 'culls' (even for deer),
said he found it difficult to look at pictures of 'culls,' and opined
that the public needed to be educated about the fact that the USDA are
not 'the experts' in this area.
We will be following up with Congressman Engel's office on this issue
in the coming weeks. Thanks to what they did in S.I., the public has had
an even better glimpse into the nefarious operation of the
taxpayer-funded USDA, as the slaughter at Jamaica Bay etc get even more
publicity; their plundering of our wildlife has gone on too long.
