Contact Rockefeller 'Preserve' about Biased Signs, Deer 'Management'
From:
Animal Defenders of Westchester (ADOW)
December 11, 2018
Rockefeller State Park preserve, located in Westchester County, has begun a
policy of killing deer 'for mgmt,' using taxpayer monies - via bow hunting,
the cruelest, most inaccurate 'mgmt' method - totally disregarding any
humane alternatives - or simply living with them.
Please read
Stop Bow Hunting in Rockefeller State Park.
In addition, Rockefeller has posted signs specifically scapegoating and
incorrectly targeting the deer as an 'invasive' destructive menace to
plants. (signs attached below) This serves no purpose except to create
hatred for the deer to justify Rockefeller's management method. (previous
incorrect signage blamed deer for Lyme disease, which is actually spread by
infected mice)
This is false: Several factors contribute to minor plant attrition,
including pollutants and insect damage; furthermore, large acres of trees
and plants in this 'preserve' were clear-cut to construct several on-site
park buildings - Rockefeller says nothing about that fact.
And instead of a 'barren' park, upon visiting last week, it was observed to
be in full, lush greenery with NO evidence of destruction whatsoever.
An attorney has just send them a demand to remove these signs. This
'preserve' was previously served with legal notice advising them of their
liability regarding bow hunting accidents as well, since they make no effort
to advise the public of hunt times etc. These agencies cooperate with the DEC
to bring in needless, cruel animal slaughter, using taxpayer monies.
If
nothing else, these signs should be removed. Rather than deliberately
turning the public against deer to help Rockefeller's choice to use lethal
methods, park officials should treat all park inhabitants as beautiful and
natural residents; this 'preserve' shouldn't use unjust prejudice to make
their controversial case.
Prejudice is prejudice - whether toward human or
non-human animals. The deer have the right to share the earth.
Please contact these officials and politely request they treat the deer
humanely, non-lethally and also remove these biased inflammatory signs. All can be cc'd.
