NY State Residents Must Take Action... End Puppy Mill Cruelty

N.Y.S. has introduced legislation to ban the sale of puppies, kittens and rabbits in pet stores state-wide. We need you to act today to get this legislation passed and help close down puppy mills.

If passed, A.6298/S.4234, would make New York State the 3rd state in the US to take a stand against pet cruelty for profit.

For decades, the pet industry has proven that it is not interested in ensuring the welfare of the dogs in breeding facilities, where mother and father dogs are nothing more than breeding machines, and puppies are nothing more than products. For commercial breeders, there is only one goal: producing the highest volume of puppies at the lowest possible price for the retailer; and for pet stores, it is about the top dollar, with often a heartbreaking and costly outcome for consumers.

With New York having one of the highest number of pet stores in the country, if passed, A.6298/S.4234 would have a huge impact on cruel breeding operations, in addition to pet overpopulation in a state where shelters and rescues are full of unwanted pets. The legislation would also help with reducing the number of these unwanted and adoptable pets being killed in shelters, with the pet stores working directly with shelters and rescues to offer space for pets up for adoption, to give them more exposure and better opportunity for finding homes.

This is a vital step forward in the fight against breeding operation cruelty (Puppy Mills) and pet industry greed. Federal regulators have and continue to fail horribly in their duty to provide oversight on commercial breeding operations, so it is clear that it is up to individual states, cities and communities to take action to not only protect animals but consumers. With New York taking this step, it sends out a very loud message that pets and consumers deserve protection.
