REQUEST "WILDLIFE WATCHING DAY" FOR NYS

From: Animal Defenders of Westchester (ADOW)
September 18, 2025

As you probably know, the NYS governor signed into law bill S6360A, to expand crossbow hunting. Thank you to everyone who contacted the governor about this horrible bill. More shortly. For now, pls ask Gov Hochul to enact 'Wildlife Watching Day' as has been enacted by Michigan Gov Whitmer. (Official Proclamation below) It reads in part:

WHEREAS, September 4 is National Wildlife Day, founded in 2005 to bring awareness of endangered animals nationally as well as globally, and to acknowledge organizations that help preserve this planet's animals and educate the public, especially children; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan has approximately 11,000 inland lakes, 36,000 miles of rivers and streams, and 4.6 million acres of public land that provide abundant wildlife habitat, providing diverse and rich opportunities to enjoy nature; and,

WHEREAS, more than 60% of Michigan's residents are actively involved in viewing and photographing wildlife, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, contributing at least $1.2 million annually to the state’s economy, according to the most recent data from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service; and,

WHEREAS, thoughtful and extensive legislative and conservation efforts by residents and policy makers have since resulted in Michigan populations of wild turkeys, ruffed grouse, Kirtland's warblers and many other species rebounding from near extirpation; and,

WHEREAS, we appreciate the important role wildlife plays in providing balance and stability to nature and improving our personal well-being through the enjoyment of it; (MORE BELOW)
