NOTE: Like other marine animals, Octopuses (also Octopi) are very intelligent, sentient beings who will be placed in miserable conditions if plans for a NYS Octopus farm go through. Your support is urgently needed to protect octopuses in NY state! Efforts to develop intensive octopus farming are underway around the globe, but New York has a chance to ban this cruel and environmentally damaging practice before it can gain a foothold.
NY State Senator Monica Martinez and NY State Assemblymember Tony Simone have introduced S.7421A and A.8043A to prohibit octopus farming in New York.
Scientists and animal welfare experts agree that octopus farming cannot be done humanely. Commercial octopus farms would house octopuses in barren, crowded tanks under near-constant light. These conditions are in direct conflict with octopuses' nocturnal, solitary, territorial, and exploratory nature. Additionally, these farms would require a massive number of wild-caught fish and crustaceans to feed the octopuses, increasing strain on finite global resources. Finally, there is no known humane method for the large-scale stunning and slaughter of octopuses.
There is no need to introduce yet another industry built on animal suffering. Octopus farming would threaten wild fish populations, New York's marine ecosystems, and public health. Please join us in our efforts to ban these farms in the state.
