Bronx Bar Association's 'Day at the Races'
I had a long talk with Robert Shaw, the previous president
of the Bronx Bar Association, who is currently involved with arranging the
annual 'Day at the Races' at Belmont raceway; he says they may not have this
event this year!
HISTORY:
For the last three years, the Bronx Bar Association has
held a 'Day at the Races' fundraiser at Belmont raceway in July. The first
year they did not return phone calls regarding stopping this event.
We subsequently asked activists to contact the Bronx Bar
Association; I was able to get a letter to the editor into NY Newsday, and
they printed the Bar Association's name, much to my surprise. Other outreach
was done as well. The recent query for horse auction video was going to be
provided to this association.
Well, we may not need it, which would be especially
remarkable in the SEABISCUIT climate. Please continue
to contact Bronx Bar Association president Frank Loverro; politely but
strongly urge the Bar to terminate ANY events that involve animal
exploitation. Here are some points that you might reinforce, that arose from
my talk with Robert Shaw:
- He cited NYS Racing Assn inspections (though he did
finally allow that drugs are sometimes administered to horses to mast
injuries and make them run faster);
- He compared horse racing to human racing (obviously
humans are willing participants);
- He asked what difference it would make if one event was
cancelled, in the greater scheme of things;
- He asked for suggestions of fundraisers that don't use
animals.
THESE ARE THE LAWMAKERS; OUR INFLUENCE IS CRUCIAL! Please
congratulate Bx Bar Assn pres. Frank Loverro in advance for having the
wisdom to remove the Bar from animal exploitation.
