Carriages

Just last week, the City Council of Birmingham, approved the license of a
vendor wanting to offer horse carriage rides in Birmingham. There was no
public hearing and it is currently on the Mayor's desk for signature.
We first found out on April 16th.
Horse-drawn carriage rides may soon be offered in downtown Birmingham.

Horse-drawn carriage travel not ideal for Birmingham's bustling
streets (read entire article

"The business that wants to bring horse-drawn carriage rides to Birmingham
is billing it as an elegant and a more relaxing and unique look at the
streets of the Magic City. It has also been cited as a tourist perk.
"However, what I can see happening is residents who would normally stick around downtown for a happy hour or to attend a show will switch gears and go to another part of the metro so they don’t have to watch horse carriages dodging traffic. I, personally, and many people I know around town will move that after-work gathering to Hoover or Homewood just so they don't have to look at, smell or dodge a horse-drawn carriage.
"And, it isn't just the animal rights activists or the people with big hearts for animals who want to avoid this. There are plenty of people who have spent time in New Orleans, Charleston or Nashville and quite frankly despise the smell of horse excrement in the 100-degree heat and humidity that Southern-state living brings."
Thank you for everything you do for animals!
