LCA Last Chance for
Animals
October 2018
On Tuesday, October 23, 2018, a 16-year-old male carriage horse named
Midnite worked a long, grueling shift on the busy streets of New York City.
At 5 AM the following morning, Midnite was found dead in his tiny stable
stall and was hauled away by the sanitation department's dump truck like a
bag of trash.
Carriage horses like Midnite are typically forced to work nine hours a day for seven days a week in extreme weather conditions and receive little to no veterinary care. The horse stables they are housed in also do not have veterinarians on-site. Had there been one, Midnite's death may have easily been prevented.
The New York City Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for inspecting the horses' stables and overseeing the overall health of the carriage horses.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
UPDATE: October 31:
Following the death of 16-year-old carriage horse Midnite on Tuesday,
October 23, 2018, a second carriage horse was found dead in its stable on
October 24, 2018, and was similarly carted away like trash by the Department
of Sanitation.
The horse, which died at the Clinton Stables on 52nd Street in NYC, also
suffered an agonizing death due to colic—an extremely painful and severe
abdominal and intestinal issue that can be caused by a poor diet, a lack of
turnout, and improper veterinary care.
Carriage horses are routinely forced to work long, grueling hours in extreme weather conditions and receive little to no veterinary care. The stables the carriage horses are housed in also do not typically have veterinarians on-site. Had there been one, both of these deaths may have easily been prevented.

Take action and demand the DOH and the city of New York to end the cruel and inhumane carriage horse industry and prevent this kind of suffering from happening again! "New York City officials and those who have stood by and watched this continue should be ashamed of themselves. When are we going to put a stop to this madness? People should be held responsible for the death of Midnite." —Chris DeRose
