Breaking Barriers in 2021 From CAARE Citizens for Alternatives to Animal Research
An Alternatives to Animal Testing, Experimentation and Dissection Article from All-Creatures.org
At CAARE we have dedicated our work to smash the myth
of “lifesaving animal experiments” and we are breaking ground in this
difficult territory.

We’re all familiar with this scenario: Egregious animal abuse is
exposed in a lab and the only response from the offender is the
tired and hackneyed statement, “Animal experiments are essential to
carry out our lifesaving work to find cures.”
At CAARE we have dedicated our work to smash the myth of “lifesaving
animal experiments” and we are breaking ground in this difficult
territory.
Here are just some of our accomplishments we were able to achieve
this past year working together with you:
- In March we kicked off the introduction of The Humane Research and
Testing Act of 2021 with a congressional briefing featuring Dr. Jane
Goodall as the keynote speaker. The HRTA will create the first-ever
institute under NIH to promote and carry out animal free research, while
requiring NIH to implement a plan to reduce animals.
- CAARE launched a global petition in support of the Humane Research &
Testing Act, amassing over 200,000 signatures and organized a call-in
day to Congress, urging our thousands of supporters to call their
representatives to support the HRTA.
- In November, the House Appropriations Committee backed CAARE’s plans
for a center by passing the 2022 budget to promote a National Center for
Alternatives to Animals in Research under NIH, including language to
require NIH to disclose numbers of animals used in federally funded
experiments.
- With your support, CAARE was successful at convincing Congress to
oppose $30 million to expand primate research, funding that was driven
by pressure from the National Primate Research Centers.
- CAARE took action when we learned that The Biomedical Advanced
Research and Development Authority (BARDA) awarded funding to expose
mice and sheep to painful chlorine gas. In addition to our action alert
that generated thousands of letters, CAARE sent a detailed letter to
BARDA demonstrating how these experiments are wholly unjustified.
- Throughout the year, CAARE researched and distributed information
about innovative non-animal research taking place right now with the
power to surpass animal experiments. We published this information on
our social media accounts and thanked each of the scientists whose
research we featured.
- CAARE investigated and exposed painful experiments on guinea pigs at
University of Michigan that bombarded their sensitive ears with loud
noises to wrongly study the human condition tinnitus. Thousands of
supporters joined CAARE in contacting UM to ask for the experiments to
be replaced with human based research.
- CAARE launched an investigation – to be continued in 2022 – into
experiments on conscious monkeys at Rockefeller University that involve
invasive brain surgeries and lengthy testing trials to study the brain’s
ability to recognize faces.
All of this has been possible because of people like you. Your
generous donation enables CAARE to fight against animal abuse in
laboratories and promote scientific advancement without animals.
