DALLAS/LOS ANGELES -- Two internationally recognized
animal rights organi-
zations have announced they have formed a new "aggressive and
well-funded"
anti-fur coalition to "deal a lethal blow" to upscale retailers
including Macy's and
Neiman Marcus who sell fur and fur trimmed products.
Officials from Los Angeles-based Last Chance for Animals
and Coalition to
Abolish the Fur Trade, with main offices in Dallas, confirmed the plans
following
four days of meetings in California.
The news of the unprecedented international anti-fur
union comes only weeks
after Stephanie Kenyon, spokesperson for the Fur Information Council of
America, resigned, citing the "instability and uncertainty" of the
industry,
according to fur trade publications.
CAFT's executive director said he welcomes the pact,
noting that LCA's 70,000
members will help support CAFT's network of community-based anti-fur
organizations that stage pickets and disruptions of fur retailers from
coast-to-
coast on a regular basis.
"We are developing this coalition to include the power
players and grassroots
organizations throughout the animal rights and environmental
communities,"
said J.P. Goodwin, Executive Director of the Coalition to Abolish the
Fur Trade.
"As a result of discussions with LCA, we've decided to
name, as our initial
targets, Neiman Marcus, Macy's and Burlington Coat Factory. Whatever it
takes, we will convince them to stop selling the skins of animals that
are gassed,
trapped, and anally electrocuted for their fur, added Mr. Goodwin.
According to LCA, the unified effort is seen by both
organizations as an oppor-
tunity to utilize campaign resources and specialized skills in the most
efficient
manner possible.
"Collaboration is crucial," said LCA founder and
president Chris DeRose.
"CAFT and LCA are both known for their no-nonsense and uncompromising
approach to animal cruelty campaigns. This partnership is going to deal
a lethal
blow to the fur industry."
