Lion
(Panthera leo)
The Lion (Panthera leo) is an iconic species and apex predator, but sadly extirpated from the northern part of its range, which once included north Africa and southern Europe. There is still a small population of the easternmost race in sanctuaries in India, but it is endangered, as are many of the remaining populations in Africa. The head of the lioness is part of the stylized logo of Born Free USA, named after the story of an African lioness who was restored to the wild, as seen in the movie, Born Free. I am pleased to represent Born Free USA here in Canada, and so I gifted the original of this study of an African lioness to Born Free.
The painting is in acrylics on compressed hardboard. I wanted to show the thoughtful, pensive expression I so often see on these animals, and yet to keep it biologically accurate (most artists exaggerate features on their drawings and paintings of lions, for dramatic effect).
