The value of animal studies in predicting drug efficacy remains questionable and ethically challenging.
Biomedical engineer Dr. Gretchen Mahler is using human cells to develop a physiologically realistic model of the kidney. It has already proven capable of filtering imitation blood and producing a urine-like substance. With further work, the model could be used to screen new drugs and eliminate those that harm the kidneys. Dr. Mahler is a 2018 grant recipient of the Alternatives Research & Development Foundation, an affiliate of AAVS.
Dr. Mahler explains the importance of her research, saying, “The value of animal studies in predicting drug efficacy remains questionable and ethically challenging.”
We certainly agree!
