The judge ruled that the permit issued by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was illegally issued to Tony’s handler, Michael Sandlin.
According to the ALDF, Caldwell ordered the LDWF to revoke the current permit and prohibited the agency from issuing any new permits to the truck stop.
For those who have followed the story of Tony the Tiger -- the tiger cruelly kept in a roadside exhibit at a truck stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana -- we have some good news.
Yesterday, during a proceeding at the East Baton Rouge District Court, Judge Michael Caldwell ruled in favor of the Animal Legal Defense Fund and Louisiana taxpayers in their lawsuit to free the captive big cat.
The judge ruled that the permit issued by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was illegally issued to Tony’s handler, Michael Sandlin.
According to the ALDF, Caldwell ordered the LDWF to revoke the current permit and prohibited the agency from issuing any new permits to the truck stop.
“We are thrilled that the court made the right decision,” said ALDF Executive Director Stephen Wells. “We will continue to do everything we can to make sure Tony’s next home is a reputable, accredited sanctuary that can give Tony the life he deserves.”
