Help Animals India
July 2014
We successfully sterilized 300 street dogs. Yet, the success of this project was far greater then population control, and far greater than we could have ever imagined!
In March, Sarnath's first ABC (Animal Birth Control) camp successfully sterilized 300 street dogs. Yet, the success of this project was far greater then population control, and far greater than we could have ever imagined!
Help Animals India funded Sarvodaya Sevabhavi Samstha travelling vets. Dr. Jain, a community leader, organized the project. Dr. Jain also runs several other community schools for poor villagers. Everyone in Sarnath knows and loves Dr. Jain! This was his first encounter with animal work. After doing the ABC project, he now says he has compassion for animals too, when before he didn't consider animals as much. He now has one street dog who lives with them.
After Humane Education, this family (pictured with Dr. Jain) - who
previously never cared for dogs - took this street dog into the vet and
provided all treatment and care.
This ABC camp was extremely successful regarding not only the dogs, but community education, capacity building, and empowerment. As one example, a village family who never cared for dogs before, but after the ABC camp began, the mother took one mange dog to the vets, then gave all the care to the dog, the dog is now relatively healthy. Dr. Jain says before the community education, this never occurred.
This ABC Camp was truly a joint effort and several community members helped to make it a success. One man offered his truck to catch the dogs. One NGO, the D-Foundation, offered a building for the surgery. One woman who is teaching for Dr. Jain offered her house for community education. And many people in the area caught their local street dogs and brought them to the clinic. Since Dr. Jain is so popular and well-loved among the community, his reputation greatly influenced the success of the endeavor.
Children learn to LOVE dogs in Sarnath!
In addition to the ABC Camp, Dr. Jain implemented several community awareness and education events in many local schools. Both children and adults were given pamphlets and lectures discussing proper behavior towards dogs and proper dog bite care. He continues to do animal welfare education in his school's curriculum.
Overall, this ABC camp has had an enormous impact on the dogs and community! With your continued support, Help Animals India can ensure this project continues into the future!
