IDA In Defense of Animals
February 2018
The current 2014 ruling under the Food Safety and Inspection Service allows line speeds of up to 140 birds per minute – that's 2.3 birds every second! The fact that the National Chicken Council even tried to increase these speeds speaks volumes about its concern for animal suffering.
The USDA has officially declined the National Chicken Council's petition
to increase slaughter line speeds that are already operating so fast that
chickens often miss the blade that slits their throat and are mercilessly
boiled alive in scalding tanks. You helped make this victory possible!
Former Tyson slaughterhouse employee, Virgil Butler, provides a first-hand
account:
When this happens, the chickens scream, kick, and their eyeballs pop out of their heads. They often come out of the other end with broken bones and disfigured and missing body parts because they've struggled so much in the tank."
