FYI: In 2001, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) selected June 1 as World Milk Day, which celebrates the important contributions of the dairy sector to sustainability, economic development, livelihoods and nutrition.

Exploiting the reproductive capacity of a female can never be justified. Every year millions of mammals are impregnated, usually forcibly through artificial insemination. Like humans they experience a nine month pregnancy. Most of them continue to be milked for seven of those nine months. After they give birth their offspring are taken from them, usually during their first day of life. Anyone who has ever lost a child cannot fail to appreciate the grief this must cause. They share the same mother:child bond that humans share with their babies. Any mother who has ever lactated to feed her child will appreciate the sheer exhaustion that mammals in the dairy industry endure as they are re-impregnated within two or three months to ensure they give birth every year.

Year after year, they become pregnant, lactate to feed the human population, and lose their children so that we can drink their milk. Their lives end at 5 or 6 years of age in a slaughterhouse. Their natural lifespan would have been 25 years.

Dairy products are not necessary for human health. No animal product is necessary for human health or wellbeing. Why inflict this torment on others when we can have delicious, nutritious plant alternatives, that cost a fraction of the environmental impact of dairy products, are better for our health, and do not exploit other lives?

June 1, as the dairy industry unites in its attempts to convince the public that dairy is necessary for human health, let us unite in telling the truth about what we inflict on others for reasons of profit, taste, convenience, and habit. As they raise their glasses of babies’ food, let us raise our glasses of plant milk and renew our vow to the victims of dairy that we will not stop telling the truth until the world is vegan.
