Thanks to coordinated efforts from multiple environmental groups, the heart of the Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve will remain an essential habitat for Quino checkerspot butterflies, golden eagles, and other wild animals, while also providing landscape connectivity.
Quino Checkerspot Butterfly
We’re thrilled to share this major victory for endangered butterflies and
other wild animals who reside at Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve in San
Diego County! In Defense of Animals opposed a corrupt "land swap" that would
have turned over precious habitat for Quino checkerspot butterflies to
greedy developers during a contentious California Wildlife Conservation
Board meeting on December 8. Our own Lisa Levinson spoke against the shady
deal along with representatives from 50 environmental groups.
After hours of heated comments on both sides, the Board voted against the
land swap and in favor of the butterflies. Now the Rancho Jamul Ecological
Reserve in San Diego County will maintain its protected status. Other state
reserves, like the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve, will also stand a
better chance of maintaining their protections. This historic land exchange
rejection ensures the Board’s commitment to conservation.
During the meeting, Board member and California Department of Fish and
Wildlife Director Chuck Bonham despicably pleaded with his colleagues to
uphold the land swap and then recused himself from the actual vote.
Fortunately, the Board acted with integrity and voted against converting
vital endangered species habitat into a sprawling high-end housing
development.
Thanks to coordinated efforts from multiple environmental groups, the heart
of the Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve will remain an essential habitat for
Quino checkerspot butterflies, golden eagles, and other wild animals, while
also providing landscape connectivity. Together, we can make a real
difference for animals!
