The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has reportedly deemed composting the fishes—l etting them die and rot—to be the best ‘solution’!
UPDATE: November 24, 2020 - More action needed!
Outrageously, the many appeals for mercy for the fishes were ignored and they were cruelly killed. It may not be too late for turtles and other animals there, though. See update and please take action for them here:
Hope Diminishing for Wildlife at Drained Lake—Urge Officials to Act!
Contact the county commissioners’ office and demand they immediately grant rescuers permission to rescue the animals.
This is truly sickening, and shows the utter lack of regard officials
tend to have for fishes:
Thousands of fishes are slowly dying in Lakemont Park (Altoona, PA) due to
the draining of the lake there. The lake is also home to turtles and other
animals.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has reportedly deemed composting
the fishes—letting them die and rot—to be the best ‘solution’!
Community members have rallied to rescue the animals but are being thwarted
by Blair County, which owns the lake but continues to fail to give them
permission to rescue them.
Contact the county commissioners’ office and demand they immediately
grant rescuers permission to rescue the animals:

Sample comment:
It is outrageous that fishes and other aquatic animals are being left to suffocate due to the draining of the lake at Lakemont Park.
Science has shown that fishes can suffer fear and pain. They are sentient beings who deserve respect, consideration and humane treatment. Composting live fishes is egregiously inhumane and irresponsible!
Volunteers have offered to rescue and responsibly rehome animals there. Please grant them immediate access to the lake now while there is still time to save some of the surviving animals, and ensure that any remaining animals are humanely accommodated.
