A former beef and dairy farmer has revealed she regrets being 'complicit
for so long' and says she is now 'committed to being part of the solution to
shift to a plant-based economy'.
Jackie Norman, who worked in the beef and dairy industries for 18 years in
New Zealand, made the comments in a statement sent to Plant Based News.
Norman also revealed that she will be speaking at the VegFestUK Summerfest
Online event next weekend, sharing her 'insights into these industries, as
well as practical strategies for vegans and animal activists on how to speak
to those still working in animal agriculture'.
Vegan Women's Leadership network
She will be speaking as part of VegFest's partnership with the recently
launched Vegan Women’s Leadership Network, in a pre-recorded video
presentation which is part of the series of panels and talks curated by the
Network.
"This has been probably the most difficult and emotional talk I’ve done,"
Norman, a member of the network, said in a statement sent to PBN. "I really
hope it helps other activists to create the positive change we want to see
in the world. I was complicit for so long. I’m glad I finally saw the light
and am committed to being part of the solution to shift to a plant-based
economy."
'Blown away'
Katrina Fox, founder of the
Vegan Women’s Leadership Network, said she was
blown away by Norman’s story after Norman joined the global ethical
leadership community and knew that this would be an important presentation.
"We need all the help we can get in communicating with animal-based farmers
without the constant ‘us versus them’ mentality so we can work together to
eliminate animals from the food chain,” she added.
"Having a woman who’s worked in the beef and dairy industries for so long
and who’s now passionate about promoting veganism is invaluable. I highly
recommend people watch Jackie’s talk at VegFestUK."
Other women speaking at the event include psychologist Clare Mann, publisher
and disability rights advocate Kathy Divine; Alokparna Sengupta from Humane
Society International – India; and Carolina Galvani of Sinergia Animal in
Brazil among others.
