1. Vegetables found to be good for the brain:
More good news for vegetarians! A new study has shown that eating 2 or
more green, leafy vegetables a day may decrease the decline in thinking
ability during adulthood. Scientists suspect that vegetables may help
protect memory and thinking speed because they contain high amounts of
vitamin E, an antioxidant that can help reduce the damage caused by free
radicals, unstable oxygen molecules generated by normal metabolism that
can damage neurons in the brain and contribute to dementia. However,
researchers didn’t find the same properties with fruit possibly because
the most common antioxidant found in them is Vitamin C, which hasn’t
been consistently found to protect against mental deterioration.

Breast cancer and diet: October, was Breast Cancer
Awareness month. Much of the information provided by the media
surrounded prevention (self breast exams, mammograms, annual physical
check-ups) and treatment. However, little, if any, was said about the
correlation of diet and the rate of breast cancer. Since the results of
the China Project, directed by Dr. T. Colin Campbell, were released
causing great surprise in the medical field, many more studies have
followed. There is evidence that high dietary fat intake, particularly
animal fat, is linked to breast cancer, among others. Women in countries
where people mostly consume a plant-based diet have a lower rate of
breast cancer than women in other countries in which the intake of
animal products is high, such as in the US.

It should be no surprise to Christians that the best diet for us is
the one God prescribed to everyone in the Garden of Eden and the one
that will be reinstated in the coming Peaceable Kingdom. A balanced
plant-based diet is the healthiest one for our bodies, temples of the
Holy Spirit. It honors God and all of God’s creation.

ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from
God, 6 who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not
in a written code but in the Spirit; for the written code kills, but the
Spirit gives life.”
God’s covenant with all creation is one of love and grace. God
enables us to bear witness of this covenant and calls us to be good
stewards of our bodies, animals and the environment.

The majority of cases of food poisoning are caused by the ingestion of
contaminated animal products. Meat products are linked to several health
problems even when precautions such as cooking meat thoroughly, washing
hands after touching raw meat, etc. are taken. The lack of sanitation in
slaughter houses, where fecal matter contaminates meat, is of big
concern. In an effort to try to make meat products safer, the FDA has
approved in August a spray that is supposed to destroy the bacterium
Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria causes 2500 people in the US to fall
severely ill and about 500 to die.

Eating a meat-based diet has caused major health problems to
humanity, tremendous suffering to God’s animals and much degradation to
the environment. Instead of reducing our meat intake and transition to a
plant-based diet, humanity resorts to science and technology to mitigate
the negative effects of meat-eating. God’s ideal is that humans consume
a plant-based diet, just like in the Garden of Eden and in the coming
Peaceable Kingdom.
