1. When We Abuse Animals: Barbara Cook
Spencer, writer, analyzes the consequences that humans suffer when
abusing animals. She believes that “we degrade ourselves when we degrade
animals” since it demoralizes us. Spencer recognizes the vital
importance of cultivating moral qualities like mercy, kindness,
compassion, and temperance, for the sake of our planet’s survival.

2. "To a man whose mind is free there is something
even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the
sufferings of man. For with the latter it is at least admitted that
suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. But
thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow
of remorse. If any man were to refer to it, he would be thought
ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime. That alone is the
justification of all that humans may suffer. It cries vengeance upon all
the human race. If God exists and tolerates it, it cries vengeance upon
God." ~ Romain Rolland (1866 - 1944), French author, Prof. of Art
History, quote from Jean-Christophe, Nobel Prize 1915.
3. Inspections Show More Slaughterhouses With
Problems: A federal audit of slaughterhouses licensed to provide
beef to the nation's schoolchildren found animal-handling problems at
four of the 18 plants audited, such us workers having to stun the
animals a second time, overcrowding of penned cows, bunching of cows in
the stunning area that caused the animals to balk of another plant and
excessive use of electrical prods. Although the proposed budget for the
coming fiscal year contains $962 million for the inspection service, the
number of employees has dropped significantly over the past 26 years.
4. (RSV) Colossians 3:12
"Put on
then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness,
lowliness, meekness, and patience,"
God calls us to choose a lifestyle centered in love and compassion,
to show obedience and the fruit of the Spirit in our hearts.
5. Exploiting Animals Linked to Food Crisis:
George Monbiot, writer for The Guardian, exposes the food crisis problem
in light of a meat-centered diet. He rightly explains that off the
2.13bn tones likely to be consumed this year, only 1.01bn, according to
the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will feed people.
Monbiot addresses the solution by suggesting the transition to a
plant-based diet, better for humanitarian reason and environmental ones
as well.
