1. Poultry Industry Pollution
In the state of Maryland, the poultry industry produces 650 million
pounds of chicken manure every year and this has sparked a fierce debate
between environmentalists and them. Gerald W. Winegrad, a public policy
professor at the University of Maryland and former state senator said,
“We don’t let hog or dairy farms spread their waste unregulated, and we
wouldn’t let a town of 25,000 people dump human manure untreated on open
lands,” ... “So why should we allow a farm with 150,000 chickens do
it?”. This manure has already contaminated the Chesapeake bay and as the
phosphorous and nitrogen levels in the bay have grown, so have the algae
that deplete oxygen needed by other aquatic life, which has led to a
crab population fall of 70 percent.

The manure produces by animal agriculture goes largely unregulated
and is creating havoc in God's Creation, damaging our flora, fauna and
many essential resources such as water and air. By adopting a
plant-based diet we help reduce the number of birds raised for food, and
therefore, reduce the pollution produced by their manure.
2. "When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves."
David Orr, Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental
Studies and Politics at Oberlin College and a James Marsh Professor at
the University of Vermont.
3. More Meat, More Greenhouse Gases
This New York Times article highlights the huge problem that
industrial agriculture is causing to the environment as it is one of the
biggest contributors of global warming gases among other things. Meat
consumption is supposed to double by 2050 and it is now that policy
makers, farmers and scientists are trying to come up with solutions.
Researchers are heating up pig manure to capture the methane trapped
within it, and then use the gas to make electricity for the local power
grid. Others are encouraging people to stop eating meat or at least
reduce their meat intake.

meat, a bid to cut emissions
Industrial agriculture is causing tremendous damage that to God's
Creation. Suffering, diseases, environmental degradation... This madness
is not going to stop until we realize that God's animals deserve our
compassion and mercy, and that most of us can live a fulfilling life
without eating them.
4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) 1 John 2:15-16
Do not love
the world or the things in the world. If any one loves the world, love
for the Father is not in him.
Love for earthly pleasures or power are just temporary and do not
fill our hearts. However, if we indeed reflect God's love in us onto all
Creation, our hearts will find eternal fulfillment.
