1. USA Today Exposes Chicken Abuse
America’s largest newspaper, USA Today, featured this week an editorial exposing the systematic and legal abuse chickens suffer in factory farms and slaughterhouses. The editorial mentions a recent Mercy For Animals’ undercover video of a poultry slaughter facility in which the egregious abuse of chickens is evident.

Tens of billions of chickens are terribly abused by humans every year. These chickens are sentient beings who suffer much like we do, and who also value their lives as much as we value ours. Allowing them to enjoy their God-given instincts, needs and emotions lets us reflect God’s love for them. On the other hand, exploiting them makes a mockery of God’s love for them.
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
To determine whether something is ‘humane’, first determine if you would
want it done to you.
~ Andrea Kadlar, animal advocate

4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Proverbs 4:6-7
Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.
Wisdom helps us discern the right path to take and the right choices to make. If we don't apply wisdom and intuition on our daily lives, we might miss important lessons and make choices that harm ourselves and others.
5. Choose Compassion!
Chris Hedges, renowned writer and columnist, explains clearly in this thorough piece the cognitive dissonance that people who abuse animals or support their abuse suffer. He focuses on the terrible and barbaric abuse that dairy cows undergo and shares some of the conversations he has had with farmers who raise them. He also shares his journey from meat-eater to vegan and states, “Ceasing to be omnivores, we cease to be numb. We restore balance not only to the earth—animal agriculture is the primary engine behind the ecological devastation of the planet—but to our lives. We break down the emotional walls that permit us to exploit living beings and kill them.”
