Kosher Meat under Scrutiny
Kosher meat has come under the public’s eye since the majority of
Israel’s beef, and a large portion of America’s kosher meat, comes from
South America where slaughterplants that produce kosher meat use the
“shackle and hoist” method: lifting them off of the ground by one hind
leg prior to slitting their throat, as is required by Israel’s chief
rabbis, the final authorities on kosher meat entering the Jewish state.
Last year People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) obtained
footage of kosher slaughter in Uruguay (http://tinyurl.com/2oe2hx)
shows animals struggling in the air and bellowing, and once on the
ground they are shown writhing and being restrained by multiple workers
who step on them and prod them before the cut.
