“Foodies” Moral Dilemma
B. R. Myers, American associate professor of international studies at
Dongseo University in Busan, South Korea, contributing editor for The
Atlantic, and an opinion columnist for the New York Times and Wall
Street Journal writes an excellent article explaining why "foodies" --
people who make the term "live to eat" part of their lives by glorifying
it without thinking of the ones being eaten (animals) -- face a serious
moral dilemma. He mentions Jeffrey Steingarten dreaming about foie gras,
Michael Pollan and his 36-hour dinner party in which he and his crew of
chefs and hangers-on roasted a whole goat in a Napa Valley backyard,
Bourdain eating raw seal, guinea pig, bats and goat testicles in rice
wine.

The Moral Crusade Against Foodies
It's sad taste and pleasure trump ethics. People who adopt
plant-based diets are able to sit at the table and thank God for their
food, feeling grateful that their food has been produced with as little
suffering as possible, taking into consideration that God's animals,
too, enjoy life and fear death, just like us.
