DiscussionsAn Open Letter to the Dalai Lama - Comments by Bruce Friedrich - 16 Jun 2007

Our subjects cover: animals, religion (Christian, Jewish and others); diet and lifestyle (vegan and vegetarian); and other miscellaneous subjects.

I am in favor of considering everything, but if we draw more attention to the fact that the Dalai Lama is not a vegetarian, etc., I think the overwhelming message will be:

Even the Dalai Lama is not taking the vegetarian message seriously.

It's us versus the Dalai Lama, and so mostly, this press will be counterproductive to our goals. Even if we get our points in (and I'd bet a lot of money that they'd be glossed over and not fully explained; the main message will be "Vegetarians call Dalai Lama a hypocrite," etc.), most people will just think, "Well, if HHDL is not veg, clearly it must not be a big moral issue."

If we could get some MAJOR moral figure to write, that would be something, but there is no one with his clout who is a vegetarian. I mean, we'd need Nelson Mandela or Bono to write, and they are not veg. either.
