Divorce and Remarriage

Comments by Frank and Mary Hoffman - 3 Dec 2004

Dear Leslie:

It's correct, that from what is written, God did not include divorce in His creation plan. In the Law, Moses granted a divorce, but Jesus said that this was only granted because of the hardness of heart of the people, and that divorce was not God's intent (See Matthew 19:3-8). However, nowhere does the Bible say that God does not recognize a second marriage.

To deliberately destroy a marriage to marry another person is a sin, but an abusive spouse is also a sin, and the innocent partner does not have to put up with the abuse. We are to do everything we can to preserve a marriage, but sometimes we cannot convince both parties to reconcile the differences.

We need to look at the bigger picture and how God's grace plays a part.

God does not see as we see, and we need to look at each situation separately, and hopefully with the eyes of God.

We hope this helps.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
