Re: Ray's comment about spanking.
That's what I meant by the kind of suffering that's endured by people when they waste away from cancer, or other kinds of terrible suffering, isn't like a "slap on the hand" or an "owie" ... which was my minimized way of describing the kind of punishment that's sometimes doled out by human parents.
Even when that kind of punishment is excessive (as in your case), it's not the same as prolonged agony or torturous affliction. The real horrors of the world would be pretty excessive Divine "punishment" for wayward children. Not to mention, we know humans are more than capable of inflicting pain of all kinds, but that doesn't mean God is.
