Well, there could always be other explanations for things like floods and fire & brimstone falling from the sky that does not involve God's wrath upon Man.
Like the New Orleans Flood by Katrina, or the tsunami that killed so many, Natural disasters occur, and we don't say that God caused them to wipe out sinful people.
Fire & brimstone from the sky, could have just been a meteor shower, again a natural occurrence.
But the people thousands of years ago blame God for floods and meteors because they didn't know any better.
So, I'm not so sure that God deliberately did these things to kill Man.
