Frank L. Hoffman Interviewed:
The Qualities of a Good Leader
Answer by Frank L. Hoffman - 19 Mar 2003

Dear Colin and Others:

There is no such thing as cold. It is the absence of heat.

There is no such thing as darkness. It is the absence of light.

Similarly, there is no such thing as bad. It is the absence of good.

Having stated this as a criteria for my answer to your question, we will concentrate on what makes a good leader. Furthermore, we will use the Bible as our guide.

Jesus repeats the greatest commandments of God (Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18) in Matthew 22:36-40. If we love God with all our being and our neighbors as ourselves, we fulfill everything else in the Bible. In 1 Corinthians 13, particularly verses 4-8a, Paul defines the character of love. Thus, a good leader must begin here.

Jesus tells us to live in a manner that will be blessed by God, as he explains in Matthew 5:3-10, and Paul picks up on this thought in Galatians 5:22-23. A good leader should always exhibit these qualities.

These are not passive qualities, they require action. If we use Matthew 5:9 as an example, one that I use quite often, we see that peacemakers are children of God, and as Paul emphasizes in Romans 8:18-25, the whole of creation anxiously awaits the revealing of such people. Thus a good leader must be a peacemaker and a child of God for the benefit of the whole of creation, without exception.

A good leader should strive to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect. (Matthew 5:48)

A good leader should believe Jesus when He told us that we can accomplish even greater works than He was able to accomplish while incarnate upon this earth (John 14:12), and then strive to do so.

A good leader should do all of these things and set the example for other to follow, and encourage them to do at least as he or she is doing, and even that they should seek to accomplish even more.

How's this for the basic job description?

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank
