In Psalm 38:3, we are told one of the reasons why we get sick.

3. There is no soundness in my flesh because of Thine indignation;
There is no health in my bones because of my sin.
NAS

These words, which were written over 3,000 years before the dawn of modern medicine, are filled with wisdom that we are just beginning to understand from a medical standpoint. But spiritually the healing was always there.

It is a well known medical fact that cortisol is produced by the adrenal gland in response to emotional stress, such as the psalmist writes about, when we don't live the loving, compassionate, and peaceful way God wants us to live. In others words, our health is compromised by having sin and hardness of heart in our lives.

Cortisol levels can also increase from eating stressor foods such as those containing caffeine, from high fat foods such as meat and dairy, from sugary foods, and from lack of sleep; and  cortisol can weaken the activity of the immune system, increase blood sugar levels, and reduce bone formation, favoring long-term development of osteoporosis.

So, how do we eliminate these causes of stress and the resulting illness?

We eliminate the stressor foods, and eat an unprocessed whole plant food diet.

We live at peace with the whole of God's creation.

We avoid anything from our lives that can bring harm to any other living being or the environment.

We learn to love and forgive others, no matter what they may have done to us; for not doing this only harms us.
