We use dates as a sweetener since we don't use refined sugar, but you can also use a little stevia extract, which is also rather expensive, but goes a long long way, so that in the long way it works out to be about the same price as sugar, but it doesn't thicken like sugar. If you tell us which recipes, we'll help you make substitutes.
