Hello Frank:
Re: Fruit Cake
You mentioned that this recipe “dispels all the jokes about fruitcake.” It seems that there’s something about fruitcake that prompts controversy.
Back in 1977, when a Canadian broadcaster named Max Ferguson presented his recipe for fruitcake, he acknowledged that he had received critical phone calls and letters when he presented the recipe the previous year. But the controversy actually stretched back further. I recall Max Ferguson ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Ferguson ) defending his fruitcake recipe to his sceptical announcer and sidekick Allan McFee ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_McFee ) on Ferguson’s morning program in the mid 1960s.
Fruitcake certainly can be controversial. What I find upsetting today is hearing that Max Ferguson’s contained three eggs. Your recipe avoids this problem, and apparently does so by substituting molasses.
