WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO KEEP THE SABBATH DAY HOLY?

Comments by Frank and Mary Hoffman - 9 Oct 2005

Dear Romeo:

Thank you for writing back and for your kind words about our web site.

I believe that almost everyone will acknowledge that the seventh day is the Sabbath, and as a Jew, I can very much relate to this fact. However, most churches celebrate on the Lord's day, the first day of the week. This is a long established tradition going back to shortly after Jesus' resurrection, and from a practical point of view, it most likely won't change. So our "job" as ministers of the Lord is to encourage people in the Lord, and not worry about these differences in tradition and doctrine. We need to celebrate our commonalities.

We need to remember all the good works that Jesus did on the Sabbath, even though the religious leaders thought those actions was breaking the Sabbath. He taught us that whatever we do that is loving, compassionate, and good is acceptable to God. This is why we don't "allow" the Sabbath issue to become a stumbling block in people's spiritual growth.

Compare this to the restrictions being placed on your Christian spiritual lifestyle in Saudi Arabia.

And we also need to remember that Ellen White never made the Sabbath day the main focus of her teachings, even though she advocated celebrating on the Sabbath day. To her, the connection between our spiritual health and our physical health was far more important.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
