Do We Really Understand the Mechanism of Forgiveness

Dear Barry:

Thank you for writing and for your question.

Forgiveness is a two way street. We are freely forgiven by God, but we must accept His forgiveness through our belief, repentance, and doing our best to go forth and sin no more.

If we compare this with Jesus' commandment in Matthew 5:48, "You shall be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect", we get a clue to answering your question. All of us should realize that we're not perfect, and no matter how hard we seem to try, we always seem to fall short of God's perfection, at lease while we're still here upon this earth. Thus, we are in constant need of repeating the forgiveness/repentance cycle.

At the Judgment, Jesus, as the faithful believer's advocate, sanctifies our faith before God, and we are not condemned, as are those who have never repented or faithfully believed.

It really boils down to our spiritual attitude. If we have a repentant spirit and seek to be a peacemaking, loving and compassionate child of God, we will never be judged (condemned).
