WHY DOESN'T GOD KEEP US FROM SUFFERING?
Comments by Frank L. Hoffman - 16 Nov 2003

Dear Roger and Others:

Thank you very much for your comments. I didn't intend to leave the impression that these were the only causes of our afflictions.

My thought pattern, and I believe that of the Biblical sages, is that God plays a part in history. He may allow some things to happen naturally, and He may actually bring about other things.

Does disease exist because God desires people to suffer? I don't believe so. On the other hand, I believe that disease is the result of the corruption we have brought about on this earth and upon ourselves. This is not saying that individual sin brings about a disease in that person, but that the carcinogens, for example, that we have around us lead to some forms of cancer. Our eating of animals brings about other diseases. Our collective lifestyle brings about communal suffering.

A while back we discussed how using spent uranium in munitions can bring about diseases and birth defects. Are the people who suffer suffering from their own acts or the acts of others? The answer can be both.

According to the Bible, even our physical death is the result of our disobeying God; therefore, isn't this also part of the answer of why we're afflicted?

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank
