In Reference to: 24 March 2013 - Where is the True Jesus Christ?
39. And some of the Pharisees in the multitude said to Him, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples."
These alternative teachers (Jesus was alternative to those who had position) could have been urging him to soften their enthusiasm for presenting Him as the Messiah. Maybe they didn't know, but is their caveat, their understandable religious concern for not overstating one's own political candidate really 'hardness of heart' (as you suggest)?
