She is considered a cage free chicken even though she has never set foot outside.
NOTE from All-Creatures.org: "More validation that 'welfare' rules, legislation, practices only result only in making people feel better, NOT the animals."
Honey, now rescued
We recently took in five laying hens from a factory farm that was shutting down here in Oregon. This is a photo of one of the birds who is now living at TOFS Tikkun Olam Farm Sanctuary.
She is two years old and has spent her entire life living in a giant building with 4,000 other birds.
She is considered a cage free chicken even though she has never set foot outside.
She has lost all her feathers from overcrowded conditions.
She is anemic and very thin.
Activists were able to save a number of birds but over 3000, just like this hen, were killed.
If you think free range eggs are more humane, look closely at this girl. She is one of the lucky ones.
