We have an exciting surprise for Iva as well. Eventually, she is going to be reunited with her friend Teddy, who had been kept with her in private residence all those years ago. Teddy has lived at Bear Sanctuary Belitsa since 2020, after being rescued from a zoo. We are so excited to reunite these old friends.
We are so pleased to share the wonderful news that bear Iva was just
rescued after years of suffering.
For her entire life, she had been kept illegally, locked in the
backyard of a private residence in North Macedonia. At first Iva had
a companion in bear Teddy, but he was later given to a zoo – leaving
her all alone. [According to his former owner, bear Teddy was found
as an orphaned cub in the wild and raised as a pet in the backyard
of his house.]
Poor Iva was kept in cramped and unsuitable conditions. Not only did Iva have no enrichment or enough space, but she was not safe. Her enclosure was not sturdy and there was a risk she could break out and endanger herself or people.
After years living under conditions not suitable for a wild animal,
things finally took a turn for the better. The person keeping Iva
wanted to voluntarily hand her over; FOUR PAWS of course immediately
stepped in to rescue her.
It took a lot of preparation, but the day of her relocation came,
and thankfully it was a great success.
Finally, Iva arrived at her new home, where she will live the rest
of her life free from the suffering she has endured.
At Bea Sanctuary Belitsa, she is in a safe and species-appropriate
environment. For now, Iva is getting acquainted with her new home,
learning to be a bear again.

Iva has been checked by a vet, and thankfully she is in good health. Now our focus is on giving Iva the best life possible. At her new sanctuary home, Iva will have access to dense forests and hills for roaming and seclusion, meadows, ponds for swimming, and lots of sunny places to rest. And she will be able to explore them all, maybe with Teddy by her side.
