GREY2K USA: "We will never give up until dog racing ends everywhere."

Greyhound Belle

We are thrilled to announce that Oregon has become the 42nd state to ban the cruelty of dog racing! Governor Kate Brown just signed SB 1504, which also limits internet wagering on greyhounds.

The campaign to end dog racing in Oregon started in the 1990’s. At the age of seventeen, my co-founder Carey Theil learned about the suffering of innocent dogs at the local Portland track and decided to do something about it. Wearing a suit he picked up at the Goodwill store, he went right to the capital and defeated a multi-million dollar subsidy earmarked for Multnomah Greyhound Park. Just several years later, MGP was forced to close and held it last race on Christmas Eve 2004!

Now, thanks to our sponsor Senate President Peter Courtney, greyhound racing will never come back to Oregon again. In speaking for the passage of his final, legacy bill, Senator Courtney made it clear that dog racing belongs in the past.

“If there is ever an issue that is not Democratic, not Republican, not urban, and not rural, it’s animals,” he said. “I do not know how you could do this to an animal that you are using to make money. I do not know how you could treat an animal like that.”
