Dear Friend,
I am just back from Scotland where on Wednesday November 5, I attended the first evidence session for the Greyhound Racing (Offenses) (Scotland) legislation to outlaw commercial dog racing. It was an historic moment to hear the Agriculture Minister Jim Fairlie declare that the full government backs the bill!
Responding to questions from the Rural Affairs and Islands Committee, Mr. Fairlie made clear that the Thornton track has already suspended activities, but highlighted the inherent risks of injury and death to greyhounds should it reopen. Bill sponsor Mark Ruskell MSP also participated in the session and then hosted a reception with other supportive lawmakers at the Holyrood.

We are so proud to be a founding member of the multi-organizational #UnboundTheGreyhound Coalition along with Scotland Against Greyhound Exploitation, One Kind, Dogs Trust, the Scottish SPCA, the League Against Cruel Sports, the Scottish Greyhound Sanctuary, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, Animal Concern, APDAWG and Say No to Greyhound Racing in Scotland – all working together to make history in the Land of the Brave.
A few miles away, on the very next day, another important session was held for greyhounds in Wales! The Prohibition of Greyhound Racing (Wales) bill was in the spotlight before the Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport and International Relations Committee. Watch the fantastic testimony provided by Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies, insisting that regulation was not the answer and that the only response to the injuries and deaths of greyhounds was to prohibit the activity entirely. He made clear that this is an international trend.
Also giving evidence previously were representatives of the #CutTheChase Coalition including Hope Rescue, Greyhound Rescue Wales, Blue Cross, RSPCA and Dogs Trust!

On Friday, Racing Minister Jane Howlett MP introduced the government’s Greyhound Racing Legislation Amendments, remarking on the changes worldwide and declaring that ending dog racing was also the “right decision for Tasmania.” This comprehensive measure will also outlaw the breeding of greyhounds for racing and prohibit the killing of unwanted hounds.

Thanks are due to the leadership of Cassy O’Connor MLC and Rosalie Woodruff MP as the main bill drivers along with Kristie Johnson MP, all of whom have worked collaboratively with members of a vast grassroots coalition consisting of our board member Fran Chambers of Let Greyhounds Run Free, RSPCA Tasmania, Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania, Animal Liberation Tasmania, Greyt Expectations Tasmania, Companion Animal Network and the Tasmanian Dog Walking Groups.
Finally, just as I came home from Edinburgh, I learned from our allies at SPCA New Zealand that dog racing proponents had withdrawn their legal challenge to Racing Minister Winston Peters’ legislation to outlaw dog racing in New Zealand! The following day, the legislature sprang into action and the bill passed first reading in Parliament!
