Dear Friend,
Today I am writing to share fantastic news from Scotland. Moments ago, Mark Ruskell’s Greyhound Racing (Offenses) bill passed by a vote of 69-27 at the Holyrood! Read our message to all members of the Scottish Parliament submitted ahead of today’s vote.
This groundbreaking campaign was prompted by the most popular Parliamentary petition in Holyrood history, launched by Scotland Against Greyhound Exploitation in 2019. Since that time, GREY2K helped inform the debate by commissioning a national survey showing that Scots support an end to dog racing by a margin of 2-1 and releasing an economic study showing that ending dog racing and repurposing Thornton Stadium for public housing would generate a positive economic impact in the millions.
We are proud to be among the animal protection groups lobbying together as the #UnboundTheGreyhound Coalition. Led by OneKind, the team includes SAGE, the League Against Cruel Sports, the Scottish SPCA, Dogs Trust, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, the Scottish Greyhound Sanctuary, Animal Concern, Blue Cross, and Say No to Greyhound Racing in Scotland.
Stay tuned to learn about the next big steps in this successful campaign. The Parliamentary term ends on March 26, and there are two more stages ahead, so get ready for more news as we have it!
For the hounds,
Christine A. Dorchak, Esq.
