Kiska's treatment and living conditions can only be described as a prison, have been called into question for many years, all while her mental and physical state deteriorated. It is reprehensible that Kiska met her end trapped in a concrete pool, denied her freedom just so a theme park could turn a profit.
We are heartbroken to hear the news of Kiska’s passing. Kiska was
known as the ‘loneliest orca in the world’ because she was held in
captivity at Marineland Canada for 40 years and had been living in
complete isolation since 2011. Kiska was the last captive orca in
Canada.
During its undercover operation at Marineland Canada in 2015, LCA’s
investigator worked with Kiska.
Her treatment and living conditions, at what can only be described
as a prison, have been called into question for many years, all
while her mental and physical state deteriorated. It is
reprehensible that Kiska met her end trapped in a concrete pool,
denied her freedom just so a theme park could turn a profit.
Kiska’s death serves as a tragic reminder of why LCA opposes marine
parks and facilities and has been fighting for decades to put an end
to animals being held in captivity for entertainment purposes.
Rest in peace, Kiska.
