Shrine Circus Abused Elephants
This month, Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed into law a bill
prohibiting the use of wild animals in circuses and traveling shows.
The bill, sponsored by Delegate Sara Love and Senator Sarah Elfreth,
specifically bans the use of big cats, bears, nonhuman primates, and
elephants.
PAWS submitted written testimony in support of the bill, outlining
the suffering of wild animals in traveling shows including grueling
travel from city to city, intensive confinement in cramped cages and
transport vehicles, violent training methods, sterile environments,
and inappropriate social groupings.
Maryland is the 10th state to restrict wild animals in circuses and
traveling acts.
