Fowler Police Department should show mercy to squirrels, not hold hunts

Imagine a scenario where your local police department gave prizes to kids for slaying puppies, all in the name of fun. Appropriately, there would be mass outrage and criticism of that department. Now, imagine they are squirrels instead.

Letter to the Editor:

Imagine a scenario where your local police department gave prizes to kids for slaying puppies, all in the name of fun. Appropriately, there would be mass outrage and criticism of that department. Now, imagine they are squirrels instead. The Fowler Township Police Department held an event that awarded prizes to children for killing squirrels.

Unquestionably, squirrels feel pain and suffering and want to keep their lives. A police department should be an institution that fosters civility and encourages peace. What kind of respected police department would teach children to do such a thing? Ironically, they are making their job more difficult.

Cruelty to animals is linked to violence towards humans. Don’t be surprised when one of the kids who participated in the squirrel hunt inflicts harm on one of their human peers. The Bible criticizes this type of event, specifically the infliction of cruelty on animals (Prov 12:10) and hurting animals for sport (Gen 49:6 NLT).

Hopefully, the Fowler Township Police Department will do the merciful (Luke 6:36) thing and cancel next year’s Youth Squirrel Hunt.
