Animals are safe from two egregiously inhumane facilities through a pair of important legal victories.
At unaccredited roadside zoos across the country, animals suffer every day. But this month, animals are safe from two egregiously inhumane facilities through a pair of important legal victories.
Setting a critical precedent, the Iowa Court of Appeals ruled in our favor in the case of the Cricket Hollow Zoo. Several hundred animals have been rescued from the facility as a result of our lawsuit and are now living happily at sanctuaries. Also this month, the Animal Legal Defense Fund announced a positive resolution in the case of Robert Sawmiller, a notorious captive wild animal exhibitor and breeder.
In response to our lawsuit challenging the U.S. Department
of Agriculture (USDA) for improperly renewing Sawmiller’s exhibitor
license despite numerous violations of the Animal Welfare Act, the
agency at last revoked his license. Seven bears and a mountain lion
have been seized from Sawmiller as a result. They've been taken to a
sanctuary, joining two wolves who were previously rescued from the
facility through legal action by the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
