There are more than 8,000 tigers held in captivity across Asia But, tiger tourism is a problem in many parts of the world. For example in the US, there are between 5,000-10,000 captive tigers.
While documenting the wildlife tourism trade across Asia, we
witnessed a tiger chained by his neck to a small, stone platform so
that tourists could sit next to him and pose for photographs. When
not being used as a photo prop, this tiger repeatedly paced back and
forth - the chain was so tight, he couldn’t even lift his head
properly as he paced. He was just one of the thousands of tigers
held in captivity across Asia.
A Global Issue
There are more than 8,000 tigers held in captivity across Asia But,
tiger tourism is a problem in many parts of the world. For example
in the US, there are between 5,000-10,000 captive tigers.
Cubs are usually taken away from their mothers within the first few
hours or days after birth so that they become used to being handled
by people. They are forced to perform tricks, such as standing on
their hind legs and jumping through rings of fire, all for tourists’
entertainment.
Tigers are naturally terrified of fire, and so they are often
punished into submission to overcome their fear. Sometimes, they’re
even declawed or drugged so that tourists can take photos and
selfies without being harmed.
