An Interview with Jonathan Balcombe

Join us on July 25th at 1 ET as we welcome dedicated animal rights author, Jonathan Balcombe! Jonathan was born in England, and has lived in New Zealand, the United States, and Canada where he currently lives. He is a biologist with a PhD in ethology, the study of animal behavior. His books include Pleasurable Kingdom, Second Nature, The Exultant Ark, and What a Fish Knows, a New York Times best-seller available in fifteen languages. His latest book for grown-ups, Super Fly: The Unexpected Lives of the World’s Most Successful Insects, won the 2021 National Outdoor Book Award for natural history literature. A children’s story book, Jake and Ava: A Boy and a Fish, was released in November 2021 by The Gryphon Press. In addition to writing books, and public speaking, Jonathan has worked as an editing consultant for aspiring and established authors, and he has taught a course in animal sentience for the Viridis Graduate Institute. Formerly Director of Animal Sentience with the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy, and Department Chair for Animal Studies with Humane Society University, in Washington, DC, Jonathan has also served as Associate Editor of the journal Animal Sentience. In his spare time he enjoys biking, baking, birding, Bach, and trying to understand the neighborhood squirrels.
