The Cardinal thanks you for your letter and has asked me to make a
reply on his behalf. He is sorry that he would not be sufficiently well
acquainted with the practice of vegetarianism to make a significant
contribution to your discussions.
One comment that might usefully be made would be in answer to your
third question. Christianity - drawing from the Biblical Scriptures as a
source of Revelation - would always seek mercy and peace, because these
are central themes in the life of Jesus Christ and his teaching.
However, the idealism and perfection to which we are invited in Christ
is inevitably flawed by the weakness of human nature. It is for each
Christian to seek to become more like Christ in their individual journey
of faith and in their communal response to the Gospel message.
