The Cardinal has asked me to thank you for your letter of 12 February
and for sending him details of "a vegetarian diet for Lent". I am sure
that you will understand if I do not answer all the questions that you
raise but please rest assured that the Cardinal is sympathetic to all
vegetarians.
It is perhaps worth me pointing out that the Christian tradition for
Lent is one of prayer, fasting and alms-giving and that fasting is never
done just for its own sake, but in order to put the individual in touch
with those many millions of people throughout the world who have no
food.
Once again, thank you for writing to the Cardinal.
With every blessing,
Yours sincerely
